Benefits of biophilic design in the workplace

Benefits of biophilic design in the workplace

In Slovakia, a design trend that loosely translates as biophilic design is increasingly gaining ground.
What is it about? Over 30 years ago, the first book on biophilic design was published by Edward
O. Wilson.

Although many years have passed since 1984, the trends and ideas of this author are timeless.
In his book, he presents biophilic design as a link between the working world ( or the home )
with plants, water features, aquariums – in short, things closely linked to nature.

All these elements evoke in man the nature from which he sprang, and to which he constantly returns to conquer
to regain his energy and recharge his strength. It is a natural phenomenon. A man locked in an office for 8 hours and another for hours
at home, he needs to bring nature into his living space.
Biophilic design brings with it a number of benefits, which we will briefly introduce.

Better air quality

The problem, especially in air-conditioned offices, is dry “technical” air. It is the living plants
help humidify the air. Various fountains, moss walls
and the increasingly popular designer aquariums also contribute to higher natural humidity.
Due to the consumption of CO2 and the production of oxygen, the air is partly
is also partially removed from the expired air. In addition, the plants absorb dusty organic compounds as
chemicals that are widely used in e.g. cleaning products.

Higher creativity

Some time ago, a study by the University of Exeter came out that pointed out an interesting fact. At workplaces and
with a small number of live plants, employee productivity andperformance increasedby up to 15%.

Less stress and better well-being

Studies also show that our ability to directly access nature can alleviate feelings of stress. Our
nervous system is made up of the sympathetic and parasympathetic systems. While the former is responsible for
to stimulate performance, concentration and thought, the second is responsible for relaxing the body. The body is
in an ideal state when both components of the nervous system are in balance.
In a chaotic and stressful environment such as a busy office, the body’s sympathetic system is very
involved in thinking and performance. At the same time, the parasympathetic system is depressed, this disrupts our
natural balance and leads to energy drain. Just a piece of nature in the office can at least
partially achieve balance, or help to relax the body so that balance can be restored.

Happier and healthier

Biophilic elements make us feel more positive. It is also proven that biophilic elements are behind stronger
employee health. Less dust, better and more humid air quality, fewer dust mites and flying
Allergens are appreciated not only by allergy and asthma sufferers, but in fact by anyone who cares about their health.

Design

Let’s not kid ourselves. Biophilic elements will make spaces extremely lively. An attractive workplace with plenty of
natural light, complemented by biophilic elements, sends a positive signal not only to employees, but also
business partners and, last but not least, job applicants to your company. At work
